Definition :
Although it doesn’t include news regarding live events or notifications regarding new releases ‘Rate Your Music’ is arguably my application’s direct competition. It harnesses elements I have mentioned in the previous post, such as the; online community, user generated reviews and opinions, ratings and is an online catalogue music information.
Rate Your Music was founded on December 24, 2000 and had established itself as a popular website by 2004. Around 2006, RateYourMusic had reach its peak along with infamous sites such as MySpace. To this day RateYourMusic’s features remain unchanged, as an online collaborative music database which allows users to catalogue, rate and review online, RateYourMusic’s popularity has dwindled over the last 10 years.
Technical Features.
The main premise is to provide a platform on which users can catalogue audio content and rate them accordingly.
The rating system uses a scale of minimum a half-star (or 0.5 points) to maximum five stars (or 5 points) (RateYourMusic, 2019).
Users are also able to create and leave reviews for RateYourMusic entries as long as they are a registered membered. Registered members were initially able to post and edit contently freely on Rate Your Music, however the majority of new, edited content must now be approved by a moderator to prevent spam and trolling (Alexa Internet, 2019).
Irrelevance & Decline :
The reasons behind RateYourMusic’s eventual decline are available only to speculation but I believe the websites failure to adapt its functionality and update the overall design of the UI could have limited its progression.
Criticisms & How Pulse will Differ :
Pulse intends on incorporating the main functionality of RateYourMusic in a slicker shell with added use for its users.
