Competitor Analysis : NME

New Musical Express (NME) is a British music journalism website and former magazine that has been published since 1952.

It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in the edition of 14 November 1952. In the 1970s it became the best-selling British music newspaper.

An online version, NME.com, was launched in 1996. It became the world’s biggest standalone music site, with over sixteen million users per month.

Evaluation :

Learning from the mistakes of its competitors and being able to successfully assess the evolution of its market, NME were able to salvage their company by making the transition to web based services. However, NME fall victim to providing content relevant to a few genres. Therefore limiting the applicability and relevance of their content and arguably diminishing the outreach of their brand. NME also provide their users with live concert updates and have tried include new mediums such as film, music video, merchandise and radio to sustain their relevance.

Since Pulse will contain both user generated reviews and content from established sources, NME.com would likely benefit from my applications success. As external sources will feature, Pulse users will be temporarily redirected to their site to access their content. Therefore fleshing out the breadth of content available to Pulse users and benefiting their overall experience whilst increasing the potential audience that NME.com content will reach.
